Obama: “Network neutrality is a fundamental principle and must be protected”

Obama

A few minutes ago the president of the United States launched a statement with which it is postulated in favor of net neutrality, urging the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to take up the matter defining the Internet as a vital service for citizens.

Obama pointed out that the principles of freedom and neutrality governing Internet since its inception, but can not be taken for granted. Therefore, ensures that the duty of the FCC, as an independent agency that is, to create a new set of rules to protect that neutrality, the extend to connections through mobile phones, and ensure that neither the telephone companies and cable operators can end it.

In his statement, Obama has also submitted an action plan which proposes a set of basic rules which he described as common sense, such as from prevent operators can block access any website or service of legal content. After all, the decision of what information websites, enjoy streaming content, or to shop online should always rest with the user.

But the US president has not been there, and has also proposed to increase the transparency of the connections between customers and carriers and prevent the call throttling, which is intentionally increase or reduce the rate at which it accesses certain sites. In this manner, operators should not be able to prioritize payment servicesslowing which are free, which will help maintain equal conditions essential for the growth of Internet.

In Europe, net neutrality is more protected through a new law approved last April by the European Parliament. This new legislation was included as part of an initiative "Connected Continent" whereby the prioritization of content is prohibited to ensure a free and neutral internet.
